So after class last Friday I was driving back to work, with NPR (on public radio, KWIT) playing on the car radio. During the short drive, I'm listening to part of, well, frankly, a science-geek discussion about fungi, and they start talking about a newly-discovered symbiotic relationship between a maple tree-eating beetle and fungi living in its gut. Interesting implications for researchers looking for new fuel sources & ways to economically extract energy from plants — since these fungi can digest cellulose for the beetle.
